From Our Chairman
As an advocate of clean tech, one of the most encouraging signs that it is still alive and well is to see all the new companies and amazing new ideas that people come up with each year. Since we last published our list of regional core clean tech companies in the beginning of 2017, we have found 9 new companies to add, including some that were out there but unknown to us. Let's all take a moment to celebrate these fresh faces and welcome them to our CleanStart Community!
  • EnerDapt--working out of Valley Extends at McClellan Business Park, providing energy management and efficiency for small commercial buildings with novel software and inexpensive sensors.
  • Terzo Power--based in El Dorado Hills, manufacturing an integrated multi-function hydraulic pump that can cut energy consumption 80% and reduce costs 75% for heavy machinery.
  • Highlands Power--inventing the "best electric motor ever" for electric vehicles, originating in Fremont but now in Sacramento.
  • Empower Energy--housed in Davis, testing and manufacturing an inexpensive battery-based home energy storage device.
  • InspecTools--using their specialized, custom drones to monitor solar and wind installations and determine what maintenance is required to keep output at its peak
  • ElectroScan--detecting small leaks in water and gas pipelines with a remote device and reducing billions of dollars in losses and unnecessary emissions.
  • Arch | Nexus--designing zero-net energy, low water use"living buildings" with zero net energy use, based in Midtown.
  • SunSystem Technology--with an office in Rancho Cordova, providing management of solar assets so the customer gets the most use out of them.
  • Intake Works -- with an increased interest in desalinating sea water, this company has a better less expensive way to draw sea water into a plant and discharge wastes using a micro-porous pipe and horizontal directional drilling, avoiding environmental damage.
In the aggregate, these 9 have added over 100 jobs to the total, and over $10 million in revenue. Congratulations to them all for having the courage to follow their passion. Coming up in May, the finals of the Big Bang competition at UC Davis may add some more Fresh Faces to the list. We'll be at Big Bang! awards for sure on May 24!.

And be sure to come to our April 26 Cleantech Meetup; our topic is Mobility. Our March 29 Meetup on batteries and storage devices was probably the most interactive to date. If you weren't there check the summary in this issue.

Featured Company: EnerDapt

EnerDapt, based in McClellan Park, is an early-stage HVAC SaaS company that provides 24/7 monitoring service, cost-driven analytics, and automated HVAC management system to commercial real estate owners, targeting small to medium size existing buildings that usually cannot afford sophisticated energy management systems. With the help of a CalSEED grant, EnerDapt is in a proof of concept phase, collecting data on demo installations to demonstrate what it can do. They have shown through the case studies so far that their AI-powered platform has helped property managers to lower operating costs by 18-22% and extend equipment lifetime by 22-28%. Besides directly addressing the impact of energy waste, EnerDapt’s machine learning algorithms, combined with existing sensor technologies, can automatically discover, quantify and autonomously repair problems before tenants even notice them....read more on our Blog
