From Our Chairman
On May 24th, the winners of the 2018 UC Davis Big Bang competition were revealed. Cleantech company DTE Materials won $12,500--the CleanStart Award and the Sierra Energy Energy Innovation Award--for its innovative building insulation material made from hemp. Congratulations to DTE for this honor, and thanks to them for putting in all the work to earn it.

The end of this year’s Big Bang is a good reminder of two things. First, to get good exposure to investors requires months of preparation (the Big Bang started back in November). Second, there is now another cycle of getting in front of investors beginning. Another Five Star Bank pitchfest is coming this Fall. Stoel Rives just opened nominations for its Sacramento Region Innovation Awards which includes a Sustainability category. CalSEED will be looking for early stage startups to apply for up to $150,000 in grant money to develop their concepts. The Western Region Clean Tech Open will be seeking new applicants in the fall to begin their process for a 2019 award. Three local cleantech companies have been in the Western CTO recently.

These opportunities are great for those willing to accept the challenges of having their ideas scrutinized. That scrutiny leads to all manner of connections and other opportunities. There are grants and contracts available once a company gets better known. It is a great path for companies to accelerate their progress from concept to company to profit. CleanStart can help you on that path with coaching and practice pitchfests to sharpen your plans and presentations. Reach out to us know so we can help you get started. There are many willing to lend a hand.
