What's Happening in our Cleantech Economy?

From Our Chairman
Opportunity is knocking. In raising money for ventures, it's all about attracting the attention of investors. It’s hard to do for just one company at a time. It’s better to try to put together a larger show. To attract this attention, investors need to see that there is enough deal flow in the region to make the time to take a look.

A big event happening next week should really help draw tech investor attention to Sacramento. The Impact Global Venture Summit is set for 12:30-5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8 at the Golden 1 Center. It’s drawing speakers, companies, and investors from all over the country. Over 1000 attendees are expected, 75 companies will be exhibiting, and events will be happening on 5 stages all afternoon. CleanStart will be there with a special "Green Aisle," showcasing four clean tech companies, and moderating a panel discussion on how investors are including ESG factors (environment responsibility, social responsibility, and governance) in their decisions. It will be a very action-packed afternoon. You can get tickets for it at a special $25 price here.

This event follows on the heels of the Five Star Bank's very successful “Bank Tank” in March where four dozen individual and institutional investors heard from 23 companies. Both of these events are significant milestones in building awareness that we have plenty of deal flow and quality, investable companies here.

The strategy that seems to be working is to showcase tech companies over a broad range of sectors--medical, food, software--and including clean tech. More investors tend to show up. We are grateful to the organizers for including clean tech, and we expect to participate in future events. If you are ready to look for investment, get ready to take advantage of these showcases. They could be a great opportunity for you.

Gary Simon, Chairman of the Board

JLM Energy
JLM energy

One of the hottest areas for clean energy startups is battery storage to smooth out fluctuations in renewable energy availability to match the time when power is needed. Founded in 2011, JLM Energy in Rocklin has been designing and building battery packs locally for three years, now with sales nationwide. JLM sells a number of behind-the-meter (BTM) products, but its best-seller is a clever compact box that is mounted underneath each solar panel and uses lithium iron phosphate batteries. This modular product, called Phazr, sits in the circuit between the solar panel and the inverter, the opposite of what most others do. JLM was self-funded by the founders Farid Dibachi  and Kraig Clark. read more on our Blog
