About Sonny Mayugba
Sonny Mayugba is building games on the blockchain as COO and co-founder of Azra Games. He previously led all people ops and talent acquisition as Chief People Officer at Swimply, the “Airbnb of pools.” Prior to CPO, Sonny led growth for the venture-funded company, stewarding revenue production, customer acquisition, and market expansion, leading the company through Series A and B.
Sonny spent a year in venture capital, first as a Managing Director at Jason Calacanis’ LAUNCH and next as an Entrepreneur In Residence at Spero Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm founded by Ebay’s Pierre Omidyar.
A serial entrepreneur, Sonny first got hooked on startups by launching Heckler, a print/digital action sports magazine that he scaled internationally and sold to Times-Mirror when he was 25. After that, there was no turning back from the startup world.
Sonny went on to start multiple companies, among them Requested, a mobile app for restaurants & bars. Requested eventually merged into restaurant delivery app Waitr, where Sonny was the founding CMO. In charge of customer acquisition, brand identity, and revenue stewardship, Sonny helped grow Waitr Holdings to $800M annual revenue, expanded into 700 cities, and rang the Nasdaq Opening Bell when the company went public as Waitr Holdings (Nasdaq:WTRH) in 2018.
Sonny is an angel investor and advisor. He also makes time for his lifelong passions for competitive table tennis, skateboarding, snowboarding, and music.
