126 Cleantech Startups in Blue Tech Valley

Recently we expanded our search for IP-based startups beyond the Sacramento region into the entire Blue Tech Valley region from Kern County to the Oregon Border, and over to the Central and Far North Coasts.    We have now published a map of all these companies so you can get an idea of this cluster.  The largest category as expected remains energy efficiency with 35 companies.  The number of storage companies grew the most in percentage terms.  And in this map we also included many more water management and water efficiency companies.  We are making a new push in 2021 to find even more companies and update this map.  Take a look.  It is quite amazing.

Activity in Microgrids

Microgrids continue to be a hot topic in California.  Three recent articles provide some perspective on the current state of play.  Two of the articles discuss concerns people have with the evolving rules in California, calling them too restrictive.  A third article reports on the action by a Wisconsin utility to install and own 30 MW of microgrids in its territory in 22 projects.  Interesting approach, but unlikely to be a path followed in California, even though the utilities would probably benefit from doing so.
