Clean Tech For All

Bridging the Gap in Clean Tech Accessibility

About the Project

At CleanStart, we believe clean tech should benefit everyone, not just the affluent. Our “Clean Tech for All” initiative, funded by the City of Sacramento and SMUD, aims to bridge the gap in clean tech accessibility. Historically, investments and incentives in clean tech have predominantly targeted upper-income groups, leaving disadvantaged neighborhoods behind. Innovators also face challenges in adapting their products to meet the needs of these communities.

In 2024, we launched the Alkali Flat Project to address this disparity. This community-driven project is designed to engage residents, entrepreneurs, and businesses to identify and implement clean tech solutions that improve everyday life for all.

Our Goals

Through eight interactive workshops from June 2024 to March 2025, we aim to:

  • Listen and Learn: Hear directly from neighborhood residents about the changes and improvements they would like to see.
  • Collaborate and Innovate: Connect clean tech entrepreneurs with the community to discover ways to adapt their products to meet local needs.
  • Educate and Assist: Help residents and businesses access available programs and funds to adopt clean tech solutions.
  • Empower: Provide education on the opportunities to use clean tech to enhance daily life.
  • Skill Development: Enhance residents’ work skills, enabling them to participate in the growing clean tech industry.

    Community Engagement

The workshops will be held at existing community sites and open areas within the neighborhood, with a key focus on the building at 318 Twelfth Street. This location is being renovated into affordable apartments and ground-floor retail/office space to reflect the community’s desired features.
